Homelessness In Mann
Like the rest of the UK, the Isle of Man has problems with homelessness and as a response to this,
a Homelessness Projects Development Officer
was appointed in 2008 to develop a Island wide
strategic approach to
homelessness. In addition to this she worked with the homelessness charity,
Kemmyrk to develop projects to help alleviate the effects of homelessness and support those at risk
of becoming homeless.

M
anx System
The Isle of Man has no Homelessness Act so there is no statutory responsibility on central or
local government to provide people with a place to live.

Public Housing

Public housing is available from the Department of Local Government and Environment and some
local authorities allocation is based on a point system. Applicants have to be over 18 years of age
and have been resident on the Island for at least 10 years, 5 of which must be in the area they
are
applying to.

Private Rented Housing

Private Rented Housing is available but this is limited and does tend to be very expensive. Financial
assistance towards housing costs is available through supplementary benefits, this is only available
to people that have lived on the Isle of Man for 5 years. Details can be obtained from the
Department
of Social Services.

Immigrations

Many people coming to the Island from the UK and the European Union have the mistaken belief that
the benefits and housing system is the same over here and can find themselves in difficulties.
Non-Manx Workers may require a work permit to obtain employment and for those who do not meet
the residency qualifications will not be eligible for benefits or to apply for Public Housing. Anyone being
made homeless or concerned about becoming homeless should look at this website for further
details
about Kemmyrk’s projects.
